FOOD AND FAITH AT FIVE

Food Bank Ministry

Thank you to Liz Massey who has offered to manage and coordinate this ministry. Recipients are identified by a pastoral dean at Tapawera Area School.  Tapawera is an area of our parish where we want to do more to reach the community. We provide a very generous carton of non-perishable grocery items up to twice a term depending on donations. Thanks to the generosity and hard work of the Community Lunch team, up to $50 is made available for each parcel. This includes the purchase of a $30.00 Four Square voucher to buy milk, bread, eggs etc and some bags of pantry staples such as potatoes, apples, onions. A specially designed card is included which clearly identifies the church as the donor. We can always respond to an urgent need within our own local area and this occurred in July. Since November last year when this initiative commenced, we have been able to deliver 8 very large cartons of groceries to families in need. Thank you to everybody who supports this, your donations are hugely appreciated. AND only give if you can - there is no pressure at all. We do not know anything about those who receive our gifts.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward” Mark 9:41

Mainly Music

2025 will be the 35th year of Mainly Music in NZ.  Andrea, Jean and team are looking for helpers and Andrea will explain about trying to get bibles into the hands of every family.  Each child’s bible costs $22.50 each and she has funding so far for 8 but we hope to purchase 50 for St John’s.  So, if you would like to sponsor 1 or 2 bibles then speak to Andrea.

12th – 14th November 2024

Shout out for goods to sell

The Chaplaincy team, which is part of the national organisation, ICHC, is running a stall at the Hospital on Tuesday 12th to Thursday 14th November between 9.30 am and 2.30 pm each day on Level 2 outside the café. We would appreciate donations of goods to sell.  Goods such as these sell well:

  • Baking, fudges, Jams or grapefruit-free marmalade, Lemon honey, Tomato relish

  • New knitted goods and woollen garments

  • New craft items

  • Good quality second-hand items suitable for Christmas presents

  • Books, including children’s

Non-perishable goods may be left in the Hospital Chapel on Level 2, or, if pick up is needed, please email miriam.martin@nmdhb.govt.nz    (Fresh goods such as baking are needed each day of the stall).

Fundraising is required to supplement the part grant from Government to continue this important, well-appreciated ministry to patients, their whanau and staff.  ICHC is a registered charity.   If you would like to become a regular donor, or require further information, visit www.ichc.org.nz for more details, or email miriam.martin@nmdhb.govt.nz

Our Purpose is to offer spiritual and pastoral care in Nelson Hospital, improving healthcare outcomes by bringing comfort, hope, and meaning to the lives of patients, their whanau and staff.
